Automated plate inoculating robot 'Kitty'

Are you looking for an efficient way to reduce personnel costs, improve consistency and process large numbers of Petri dishes in your food safety laboratory? The Kitty automated plating machine was developed for laboratories that want to perform microbiological analyses faster, more accurately and more efficiently. With this high-quality plate inoculating robot, one person can fill more than 360 Petri dishes per hour. This makes the Kitty a compact, reliable and cost-saving solution for food and water laboratories.

The Kitty automated plating machine: operation

Within an average processing time of only 10 seconds per Petri dish, the Kitty automated plating machine carries out several automatic operations simultaneously:

  • fetching, opening and filling the empty Petri dish with agar;
  • adding the sample;
  • closing, agitating, re-cooling and coding the Petri dish;
  • sorting and stacking the filled Petri dishes;
  • communicating with the Laboratory Information Management System, or LIMS.

Advantages of the Kitty plating machine

The Kitty automated plating machine offers several advantages for food safety laboratories:

  • fast: approximately 10 seconds per Petri dish
  • capacity of more than 360 Petri dishes per hour with one operator
  • accurate and user-friendly
  • human variations are minimised
  • suitable for processing special samples
  • low-maintenance and supported by a low maintenance contract
  • equipped with 2D barcoding
  • communication via LIMS
  • small footprint of approximately 1.5 metres by 4 metres

Efficient Petri dish filling with one operator

The Kitty plating machine automates a large part of the plating process. This reduces manual handling and allows one operator to process large numbers of Petri dishes efficiently. The machine has storage capacity for 560 empty Petri dishes and can fill Petri dishes continuously for up to two hours in one operation. Thanks to its combination of speed, accuracy and automation, the Kitty is particularly suitable for laboratories that carry out many microbiological analyses every day.

With eight medium pumps and ten sorting-and-stacking units, the machine is designed for efficient and well-organised processing. Filled Petri dishes are automatically coded, sorted and stacked, creating a more stable and manageable workflow in the laboratory.

Compact and low-maintenance plating machine

The Kitty is a remarkably compact plating machine for microbiological analyses in food and water laboratories. Despite its high processing capacity, the machine has a small footprint. This makes it suitable for laboratories that want to increase capacity without using unnecessary floor space.

The machine is low-maintenance and fitted with high-quality electronics. This type of machine has been around for twenty years and has been successfully used by SGS Netherlands, SGS Portugal and ILS England. This practical experience underlines the reliability and suitability of the Kitty for professional laboratory environments.

Working method of the Kitty plating machine

The working method of the Kitty automated plating machine is clear and user-friendly. The operator follows the instructions on the screen for processing the sample, scanning the barcode of the sample tube, pipetting and dosage. After operating the knee pedal, the correct medium automatically flows into the Petri dish.

The operator then adds the sample in one smooth action using the pipette pistol. After that, the used tip is discharged, a new tip is clicked on and the process is repeated. With this system, one person can process around 350 Petri dishes per hour. This makes the Kitty a powerful solution for laboratories that want to combine high output with a controlled and consistent workflow.

Automation for an efficient laboratory process

For food safety laboratories, a faultless and efficient process is essential. The Kitty automated plating machine supports this by combining speed, accuracy and automation in one compact system. Because many repetitive operations are automated, the risk of variation between operators is reduced and the processing capacity per person can be increased considerably.

The LIMS connection and 2D barcoding contribute to structured processing of samples and Petri dishes. As a result, the Kitty fits well into laboratories that want to work faster while maintaining clear registration within the process.
